This is a French fortified red wine made in a way that is similar to vintage port production. The grapes are crushed and when the fermenting juice reaches about 5% alcohol the makers add grape spirit and raise the percentage of alcohol to 16% – thus making the yeast inactive and stopping the fermentation with natural sugar left in the wine. This is 90% Grenache with the rest of the wine made up of assorted southern French grape varieties. It goes especially well with chocolate, caramel, coffee, or dried fruit desserts.
