In 1869 Chateau Preuillac established itself in the most northly part of the Medoc near the town of Lesparre-Medoc. This is the last appellation before the Atlantic Ocean, at the mouth of the Gironde Estuary.
The climate here is favourable for producing wines with high, fresh acidity due to the cooling influence from the Atlantic. The soils here are free draining gravel dunes, a far cry from a sandy beach that’s for sure.
In 1932 Preuillac were hounoured with inclusion into the first role of honour as a Cru Bourgeois, a position which they have held ever since, withstanding subsequent re-classifications intact.
The wines of Chateau Preuillac are powerful, robust and rich in flavour, with hints of toast, vanilla, very ripe red fruit and leather. Comprising of a blend of 50% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon & 2% Cabernet Franc with 21 & 31 days maceration for the Cabernets and Merlot respectively, thus softening the tannins into a smooth and silky robe. 15% of the wine is placed in New barriques, the remaining in old wooden tanks for Malolactic Conversion, after which the wine is the matured for 12 months on fine lees in French oak. This ageing process brings complex notes of vanilla and toast alongside some sweet spice hints. As it is a 2012, the bottle age is bringing an earthy, leather and charcuterie profile, further defining it as a truly great Medoc of Bordeaux.
