The vineyard in Ditchling, East Sussex was established in the spring of 2005 on a beautiful south-facing slope with the South Downs as a backdrop and is now one of the more charming vineyards in England. The family-run single-estate vineyard now extends to 17 acres, mainly planted with the three classic varieties of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier for the production of Sparkling Wine, and also Pinot Gris, Ortega, Rondo and Pinot Blanc for use in still wine. Two rare old Champagne varieties of Arbanne and Petit Meslier are grown as well.
This beautifully ripe and elegant 100% Pinot Noir hails from the outstanding 2018 vintage where conditions were considered to be perfect, producing a bumper crop both in terms of quality and quantity. Incidentally, Pinot Noir now tops the table for the most widely planted grape in the UK. Holding 29.7% of plantings, with a hectarage of 1,063.
The wine is aged on the grape skins for 12 months prior to pressing, barrel fermented in French oak for 4 months and finally for 6 months in the bottle.
The Ditchling Red is a soft and fruity wine; smooth acidity and light tannic structure with warming red fruit aromas with lots of blackcurrants, cherry, and spice on the palate.
